Ablade Glover

Painter

This impressive painting is a great example of Prof. Ablade Glover’s work. Glover uses an impasto technique, where he applies oil paint thickly with a palette knife. His confidence as an artist shines through in the generous amount of paint he uses, and the energetic application. Most of his compositions appear abstract but details and perspective emerge, and resolve into scenes of contemporary Ghanaian life.

In this painting, the repeating pattern of thickly smeared oils in a mixture of bright pastel tones, interspersed with scrapes of his knife and swift brushstrokes, resolves into a multitude of people kneeling to pray, stretching into the far distance.

It’s a scene that captures the mass of humanity, united in one focus. At the call to prayer, the assembled worshippers kneel and press their foreheads to the ground. This painting is part of a body of work begun in the early 2000s exploring religious devotion.

Ghana is one of the West African countries, like Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire, where the east-west line dividing arid desert (north) and lush jungle (south) environments is accompanied by an invisible line that divides between moslem in the north and Christian culture in the south. Based in Kumasi, which is closer to the north than Accra, Glover is bound to include moslem culture as influence in his works. This painting of mass devotional prayer outdoors has a much quieter colour palette than his usual market scenes, and the pastel tones reflect the washed cotton (especially indigo) of the northern tribes.
