This is a really delightful sculpture of a lady’s head, by a previous winner and three-time finalist at Zimbabwe’s prestigious National Arts Merit Awards (sculpture category).
A former apprentice to established artist Joe Mutasa, Rufaro shows his confidence with the chisel through the sharply defined features of her beautiful face. He has used a grinder to create the detail of her hair. For the shiny surfaces, he has sanded them smooth and then heated the stone and applied clear wax, then polished them up to a high gloss.
Lepidolite is a mineral of the mica group, containing lithium. This stone comes from Bikita, one of two sources in Zimbabwe. Lepidolite from the other mine in Mutoko is a deeper purple. All colouration and texture within the stone is entirely natural.
The piece is in the UK and will be shipped from there; P&P at buyer’s expense.
