Rufaro is seeking to stay ahead of the game, by choosing to work in this beautiful stone. He is a previous winner (2015) and three-time finalist (2014, 2016, 2017) at Zimbabwe’s prestigious National Arts Merit Awards in the 3D sculpture category.
Red jasper is a semi-precious gemstone that is finding increasing favour among Zimbabwean sculptors. Its extreme hardness (it needs electric tools to be worked, as it can’t be done by hand) makes it difficult and expensive to sculpt, but the end result is extraordinary.
Lines of white quartz and other minerals form veins within the jasper. All colour and texture within the stone is entirely natural (and not lines of weakness). A layer of clear wax, polished to a shine, enhances the natural colour of this beautiful stone.
