This is a really lovely sculpture, where form and material work in harmony. The agate is such remarkable stone: subtle pastel shades of pale pink, peach and creamy white, laced with bursts of crystals.
It’s extremely hard stone, so it’s difficult to sculpt, and the sculptors have to use electric tools as it can’t be worked on by hand. So, Rufaro has used a small rotary grinder to pick out the details of her face and hair.
Interestingly, he has left the raw textured surface on the back, to show us how the stone looked before he drew the sculpture out from within. All colour and texture within the stone is entirely natural. The crystal-lined cavities are particularly intriguing.
