Sculptor

As a gesture of thanks to the humans who have dedicated their lives to protecting the rhino against poachers, the rhino spirit is caring for their baby, to say thank you for looking after us.

The rhino is much revered by the Shona, and it is very wrong to kill one. There are very few left in Zimbabwe now, as poaching has become a big problem again in recent years.

All of Sylvester’s sculptures are carefully thought-out works with a powerful message. Sylvester was a great storyteller and communicator and devoted much of his time in his later years to encouraging younger artists within the ‘Shona sculpture’ movement in Zimbabwe. His pieces weave together Shona mythology, spiritual belief, cultural customs and insights into contemporary and traditional Shona society. In short, he was an anthropologist’s dream!

Springstone is the local name for a hard variety of serpentine stone. It is the favoured medium for Zimbabwe’s most famous sculptors.

Rather than our words though, why not watch Sylvester speaking about his sculpture…
