Many of Sylvester Mubayi’s sculptures are inspired by Shona culture Shona culture and customs, and they can give us interesting insights into how Zimbabwean society works.

Here is a little girl and her younger brother. During the day, her parents are both at work and she is responsible for looking after her brother. The family is solid, and the little boy will grow up knowing the love of his sister and when he has children of his own, he will leave the eldest to look after the youngsters.

Springstone is the local name for a hard variant of serpentine stone. It is the favoured medium for Zimbabwe’s most famous sculptors.
