Tendai Gwaravaza

The full title for this sculpture in the Shona language of Zimbabwe is Kupindara Kwemazuva, which Tendai has translated as the Movement Of Time.

The spiralling lines represent the passage of time over the aeons, out to infinity. The central hole, which draws your eye into and through the piece, concentrates the focus and gives the sense of movement through limitless space.

Tendai joined Guruve’s select group of artists last year. We were so impressed with the simplicity of his organic forms, which he marries with bold choices of raw materials. This fantastic piece of semi-precious red jasper is a perfect example – it really has the WOW factor and would make a great statement centrepiece.

Tendai has used a coat of clear wax to enhance the fascinating internal colour and structure of this amazing stone. Red jasper is extremely hard, so power tools are essential to sculpt it. Although it appears to be full of irregularities, the stone is actually very solid and strong. In fact, it’s perfectly suitable for display outdoors in any climate.
