This piece is clearly a head – two large round eyes and a smiling mouth. Those big observant eyes have witnessed important events that can be shared and discussed with others.

This piece was created during the momentous days of the fall of Mugabe from his 37-year stint as Zimbabwe’s President, and young Zimbabweans flocked to see history being made, to be part of the unfolding events, that they might tell their future children and grandchildren they were there.

Unsurprisingly, this hard variety of serpentine stone has been named ‘avocado’ after its striking green and yellow colouration. The colours and texture within the stone are entirely natural, enhanced by the application of a coat of clear wax.
