Hidden Strength

Shona artist Tonderai Sowa with one of his abstract sculptures

The top circle is the grandfather (sekuru) and the right is grandmother (ambuya).

“In our culture, the man is the head of family but the mother also plays an important role equal to the head of the household.”

The female loop at the side is equal in size to the top loop, which represents the man of the household. However, her loop is slightly hidden, reflecting the fact that she wields her power within the household rather than in the public arena.

As with all Tonderai’s sculptures, this piece has been carved by hand from a single piece of raw stone. Tonderai has restrained himself with this piece, and has kept the form relatively simple – to great effect.
