A nuclear family group: the small central loop represents the children; above is the mother (the loop top left) and behind her is the father (the loop top right), so her arm protects the children and his arm protects her and the children. The layers of support and protection within the family are nicely portrayed in the movement of the piece.

Springstone is a hard variety of serpentine stone. It is suitable for outdoor display, as it is dense and impermeable and has very few flaws that might be exacerbated by frost action. The green lines in the photos are natural veins in the stone.
