Shona artist Tonderai Sowa with one of his abstract sculptures

Tonderai Sowa

“After a long and winding journey, finally you find the smooth outer road to your destination.”

The twists and turns reflect the fact that the vagaries of life’s path can be frustrating. The smooth line that brings you back to base reflects the relief we feel when things work out.

Tonderai is one of Guruve’s most popular artists, and it’s easy to see why. It is almost inconceivable that an artist could create such complex and intricate work from a single piece of stone.

This is a fantastic small- to medium-sized sculpture (depending on your space!). It would be great for a central position as it is interesting from every angle.

Springstone is the local name for this hard type of serpentine stone. It has a dense, even internal structure of small grains of rock with very few flaws, and is the perfect medium for Tonderai’s technically challenging style.
