“The child is happy to see their mother has returned, and embraces them with open arms.”
The taller left hand side is the mother, and the child is the twist on the right. The line that joins them shows they are flinging their arms around each other.
Tonderai has established a reputation for astonishingly delicate and intricate work that is also satisfyingly clean and simple. This lovely piece combines great technical skill with fluid, uncluttered lines, and represents the best of contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture.
As with all his artworks, Tonderai has carved this lovely sculpture from a single piece of raw stone.
Springstone is the local name for a hard type of serpentine stone. It has a dense, even internal structure of small grains of rock with very few flaws, and is the perfect medium for Tonderai’s technically challenging style.
