Shona artist Tonderai Sowa with one of his abstract sculptures

Tonderai Sowa

Sculptor

An owl in abstract form, head to one side, with the two loops representing the two big eyes.

Tonderai is one of Guruve’s most popular artists, and it’s easy to see why. It is almost inconceivable that an artist could create such delicate and intricate work from a single piece of stone. But, for all its complexity, the lines are fluid and uncluttered.

Springstone is the local Zimbabwean name for a hard variety of black serpentine stone. It comes from a geological formation known as the Great Dyke, in northern Zimbabwe. It is rich in serpentine stone, and also iron and various other minerals such as chromium.

The piece is in the UK and will be shipped from there; P&P at buyer’s expense.
