“This bird is protector, like a guardian spirit. You always have to stay alert when watching over others.”

A mother swan looking down at her brood of cygnets with loving compassion.

Tago explores the different aspects of human nature, using birds as symbols. He is a family man, having had three wives (sadly, his youngest wife passed away in 2022), a father and grandfather. Here, he celebrates the joys and burdens of parenthood.

Agate is a very unusual medium for a Zimbabwean sculptor; indeed, Tago is one of very few artists who dare to take it on. Its extreme hardness (it needs electric tools to be worked, as it can’t be done by hand) makes it difficult and expensive to sculpt, but the end result is extraordinary. The stone has some natural holes and lines, but they are typical of agate and do not affect its structural strength.
