“There are two very similar shapes; one reflects the other, like a parent is reflected in the face of their child.”
So the two loops within the piece are like mirror images of each other. Sometimes a child (the lower loop) looks just like one of their parents (the upper loop), and they may inherit the same character and mannerisms too.
Willard’s use of simple flowing lines keeps the sculpture feeling fluid and uncluttered, so we can enjoy the elegant form of the piece and the incredible internal colour of the medium.
This lovely pale cream, pink and black variety of serpentine stone is very unusual. It would make a real statement with a darkish background and clever use of a spotlight.
