“The circles and the movement of the lines moving gently downwards show the elements of peace. The movement is harmonious and not aggressive.”
There is a calming meditative quality to this sculpture. Willard articulates beautifully the sense of calm and quietness such a restrained form brings.
It would be a lovely addition to any garden or large interior space, as it seems to radiate tranquility.
Also, the simple uncluttered form and the graceful sweeping lines allow us to enjoy the incredible internal colour and structure of the medium.
Willard is so lucky, because the area of northern Zimbabwe where he lives has such varied and interesting geology. Much of it is serpentine, which is often the perfect hardness and structure for sculpting.
This particular variety of serpentine is a subset of what’s known locally as ‘leopard rock’; we think of it as having tiger stripes! It is especially hard and rings with a metallic sound when struck with a punch.
