“When people are celebrating, they make different movements. Some dance, some wave their hands in the air, some are shouting. So the movement in the piece is spread all over, it is full of joyous movement.”

This tall elegant sculpture has a real wow factor! It’s definitely one of the highlights of this year’s collection of Shona sculpture. It looks fabulous from every angle, with a fantastic combination of movement and colour. A perfect garden centrepiece, exceptional.

Willard weaves graceful movement into the stone. Somehow, he has the ability to wield his chisel like a paintbrush, creating sweeping strokes and elegant flourishes.

Obviously, the stone is the star of the show! The colours in the stone are entirely natural, merely enhanced by the application of a coat of clear wax.

The green veins, with their crystalline structure, are part of the natural stone. They are made of a different mineral, even harder than the serpentine, and they have a fascinating texture that’s almost like crocodile skin. It’s a sculpture you could gaze at for hours…
