Zimbabwean artist Christopher Tigere Tandi stone sculpture sculptor Africa

Christopher Tigere

Christopher Tigere was born in 1989 in Mutoko, Eastern Zimbabwe. His family are part of the Tandi family of well-known sculptors of ‘fine art’ – the very detailed and realistic sculptures of wildlife and tribal heads. His father taught Chris and his brothers how to sculpt.

Chris spent much of his childhood in Murehwa, a town to the east of Harare, and then moved to Harare in 2007 after completing his Ordinary Levels. He then started sculpting full-time at Chitungwiza Arts Centre, where some of his older brothers were based, including Tafadzwa Tandi and Farai Tandi.

His work is a product of inspiration from nature and beauty. He says,

“Whatever I do comes from [my] admiration of the amazing nature we are blessed with and [the] beauty in each and every one of us.”

Guruve are delighted to represent Christopher Tigere in the UK and worldwide. He is part of the so-called ‘third generation’ of Zimbabwean sculptors. Like many of his peers, he has embraced more abstract forms of sculpture, moving away from the representational artworks of his forebears. Additionally, he is unafraid to take on the challenge of working with the very hard stones now being used by some daring Zimbabwean sculptors, such as agate and red jasper. We are excited to see how his work and career progress…
