Biography portrait photo of Zimbabwean sculptor artist Tendai Gwaravaza

Tendai Gwaravaza

Sculptor

Sugilite is a new type of stone for us this year: what lovely colouration, of intensely deep purple contrasting with gold and green. The way one colour graduates into the other is particularly pleasing.

Tendai has made very intelligent and creative use of that graduation of colour. He interprets the upper golden stone as the rays of sunlight bathing the dawn sky, while below it the land still lies in purple shadows. Very poetic!

Sugilite is a rare and complex mineral. It’s named after Sugi Ken-Ichi, a Japanese petrologist who discovered it in Japan.

The lines that criss-cross the stone are entirely natural, they are not cracks or lines of weakness.
