Wow, that stone is incredible! Tafadzwa has wisely kept his sculpture very simple to allow the stone itself to sing.
The form is a head, but only the gently closed lips are defined. The absence of ears, eyes and nose is intended to communicate the withdrawal of the senses as one sinks into a meditative state. To reinforce this message, Tafadzwa has sculpted the top of the head so it appears to fold in on itself.
The agate is the star of the show here though – have a look at the back of the sculpture too, it’s fascinating.
Of course, all the internal colour and curious structure is entirely natural. Indeed, although the stone looks like a conglomerate glued together, it’s actually very solid and strong.
