Locardia Ndandarika passes away

Locardia Ndandarika and her daughter Norma at our wedding

Locardia Ndandarika (and her daughter Norma) joined us at our wedding and made everybody dance!

Sad to say, the recent spate of deaths amongst the senior generation of Zimbabwe’s sculpture movement continues – this time with Locardia Ndandarika, Zimbabwe’s most senior woman sculptor.

Locardia was the first wife of the hugely respected sculptor Joseph Ndandarika, and a well-known artist in her own right. She’s pictured above with her daughter Norma at our wedding in London many years ago. A happy chance: Locardia was Artist in Residence at an exhibition of Zimbabwean sculpture at the OXO Gallery on the South Bank that Summer. Having badgered us for years to get married, and demanding she be present, fate decreed that she was in London in person that very weekend! She was the life and soul of the party, insisting everyone got up and danced and made sure all our guests had a very memorable time!

RIP Locardia we will miss you and we send our condolences and best wishes to your family.

Moses Masaya

Sculptor

Although not the most famous name amongst the lucky Zimbabwean sculptors who first gained international recognition as the ‘first-generation’, Moses Masaya’s tremendously stylised work is instantly recognisable and much respected.
