Blind Man is a relatively early work by Bernard Matemera, one of the greatest names in Zimbabwe’s Shona sculpture movement. It has a simple form which, if anything, merely enhances its power.
A marvellous feature of Blind Man is the way Bernard has sculpted the eyes, as if they were wet clay that the potter had pinched closed to signify the lack of sight. Note also the precision of the stylized mouth and ears, which are diagnostic characteristics for authenticating his works.
Guruve is advertising this piece for sale on behalf of a private collector who purchased it in 2012 in Harare, Zimbabwe. The original Chapungu Sculpture Park Permanent Collection reference number 126 is incised into the base of the neck. A Chapungu certificate accompanies the piece, in addition to the usual Guruve literature.
