Master first-generation Zimbabwean sculptor Henry Munyaradzi, the most sought-after name in the Shona sculpture movement

Henry Munyaradzi

Sculptor

This sculpture ‘Hamerkop’ is being advertised for sale on behalf of a private collector.

A hamerkop is a prehistoric-looking bird that is native to Zimbabwe.

There is a line of quartz running through the serpentine on the back of the sculpture.

This piece was originally bought directly from Henry, the most sought-after name of the Shona sculpture movement, by the respected Matombo Gallery of Harare, Zimbabwe.

Matombo exported it to the USA for Henry Munyaradzi’s solo exhibition at Nicole Gallery in Chicago in January 1991, where it remained until 2012 when it was brought to the UK by a private collector.

It is in immaculate condition. It is signed on the base. Full Matombo paperwork accompanies the piece.

Beware of less scrupulous people than ourselves selling non-authentic ‘Henrys’ – if the piece or the price looks too good to be true, there’s probably a reason for it.

Imperial measurements are:
20 1/2″ x 12 1/5″ x 9 1/10″ and weight 82 2/3lbs
