“A family joined by the power of love and respect, regardless of age and gender.”
Each upright represents a different branch of an extended family.
Family bonds are crucial in African society. With no state social support systems, extended family ties provide health and financial safety nets for individuals.
Fruit serpentine is the local Zimbabwean name for this colourful type of serpentine stone. It comes from near the town of Kwekwe in central Zimbabwe. It only occurs in small outcrops so it is not commonly used by sculptors these days, which is a shame.
All the colour and patterns within the stone are entirely natural, enhanced by the application of a coat of clear wax. With Antony’s wonderful finishing, it looks like it has been glazed with glass.
TIP: display this sculpture somewhere well-lit to bring out all the subtle and complex colour in the stone.
