Young sculptor Michael Gwaravaza from Zimbabwe's Shona Sculpture movement

Michael Gwaravaza

Michael Gwaravaza says,

“my main art philosophy is to help celebrate the inherent Shona values, culture and traditions through stone sculpture”.

Michael Gwaravaza was born in Wedza, in the east of Zimbabwe, in 2000. His father, John Gwaravaza, is a master sculptor of ‘fine art’ – the very realistic animal and head carvings. As a result, Michael was surrounded by stone carving from a young age.

In 2018 Michael became a full-time art apprentice, training under the guidance of his father and elder brothers Tendai Gwaravaza and Timothy Gwaravaza. They mentored him and supervised his creative development. Michael completed this informal sculpture training in 2020. Since then, he has worked alongside his brothers.

Guruve are delighted to welcome Michael to our gallery. We are excited to see such a talented young artist, whose restrained forms celebrate the beauty of the raw materials.
