Michael told us that he had heard an ancient story of the ladies of the royal Zulu house. It was about how they wore elaborate headdresses to emphasise their beauty and power. This inspired him when he was creating this sculpture: the layers of colour and the shape of the stone came together to imitate these impressive headdresses.
This pleasingly simple abstract form combines with swirls of lilac, pale blue and milky white in the semi-precious agate stone. All the colour and texture within the stone is completely natural, including the tiny lines that criss-cross the stone. The agate is solid, strong and exceptionally hard.
