This striking sculpture is a lovely example of the work of the late great Nicholas Mukomberanwa when he was at the peak of his creative success. He has sculpted the lines of the stylised faces with such confidence.

Like many collectors of Shona sculpture, we hold Nicholas in extremely high regard. His work rarely comes onto the open market, as most pieces are treasured items held in private collections. In particular, smaller sculptures are hard to find, as ‘big’ artists tend to make big pieces!

This colourful variety of serpentine stone is known locally as ‘fruit serpentine’ and comes from Kwekwe in central Zimbabwe. It’s very unusual to find a piece by Nicholas in this type of stone.

As this is now a ‘heritage’ piece, we’d suggest indoor display would be preferable.

Guruve is advertising this piece for sale on behalf of a private collector who purchased it in 2023 from a well-known collection in South Africa. Although this piece has no historical paperwork, Guruve will provide a certificate. Nicholas has signed the piece, and Guruve has no doubt of its authenticity. The price reflects the limited documentation.
