Royal creates his trademark feathered effect by hand – he strikes the surface of the sculpture with a punch (a metal rod with a pointed tip).
It takes great skill to place and hold the punch to create neat parallel lines, judging the tiny change in position with tremendous accuracy every time.
Royal sands the springstone and then applies clear wax, thereby creating the contrasting shiny black finish of the eyes and beaks.
