Royal has achieved the feathered effect by striking the surface of the sculpture with a punch (a metal rod with a pointed tip).
It takes great skill to place and hold the punch to create neat parallel lines, judging the tiny change in position with tremendous accuracy every time.
The contrasting finish of the eyes and beaks is achieved by sanding the springstone and then applying clear wax.
