Royal achieves the stippling effect for the feathers using a chasing hammer, which has little teeth. He strikes the stone with perfect precision over and over, almost like sculpture pointillism. He creates the contrasting shiny black finish of the eyes and beaks by sanding the stone smooth and then applying clear wax.
Springstone is the local name for a hard variety of serpentine stone. It is dense and durable, with small grains, and rarely has any imperfections, making it a superb sculpture medium. In its raw form, the stone is a pale matt charcoal grey.
Sculptures of this size are very versatile and work equally well indoors or out. In fact, you could display it outside during summer and then bring it inside for winter, when you are indoors much more anyway.
If the textured surface gets some greenery growing on it, you can easily wash this off with some water and a scrubbing brush. The sculpture itself won’t be affected.
