Tafadzwa Tandi

Sculptor

A delightful little sculpture of a flower form, with opening petals, in a fascinating and unusual stone.

Aquaprase is a new stone, only discovered by Zimbabwean sculptors a few years ago, and it is still rare to see. It’s a bluish-green variety of chalcedony, coloured by chromium and nickel – and chromium is available in abundance in Zimbabwe. The pale pastel hues are cool and calming.

Although it is full of irregularities, the stone is actually very hard and strong. It’s great that Tafadzwa has incorporated some of these natural textures and fissures into the finished sculpture – this creates contrast with the smooth polished surfaces, but it also reminds us of the original raw material and its complex structure.
