Tafadzwa Tandi

Sculptor

“Sometimes it’s difficult for a well-matched couple to be together; sometimes, life just doesn’t work out that way. But when such two are together, they can do anything together as a team.”

Two half ovoid forms intersect; they share the inner core of pure white crystalline stone. In this way, Tafadzwa is representing two people who are complementary, they are so perfectly balanced and harmonious as a couple.

Tafadzwa’s abstract form is so striking – it has a strong three-dimensional shape, sweeping lines and sharp edges. His sympathetic approach, delving into the centre whilst leaving some of the patterned and colourful outer stone, echoes the harmonious theme of the sculpture.

Not many Zimbabwean artists use agate, because it’s extremely hard, so it’s difficult and expensive to sculpt. Also, it’s expensive to buy, and because it comes from Mozambique, there are significant transport costs as well. However, it’s such lovely stone and the end result is so extraordinary, it’s worth all the expense and effort.
