The tallest part is the husband and father; the slightly lower loop on the left is his wife. They are joined together at the back of the sculpture, as if they are arm in arm. Their encircling form protects their child, the heart of the family, represented by the inner loop at the centre.

Springstone is a hard type of serpentine stone, with a dense, even internal structure of tiny grains. This variety, with pale speckles, comes from the Impinge pass through the Great Dyke in northern Zimbabwe.
