“It’s a spiritual bird that shows the rain is coming.”
The upper loop is the body of a bird, the circular hole (‘negative space’) is its eye; the colour of the stone shows the colour of the clouds.
Such a gorgeous piece of stone, with fascinating internal colouration. Delicate shades of lilac and rose pink bloom their fractal patterns across the outer surface. Amazingly, in the centre where the crystals merge into opaque milky white and pink, the stone is so thin you can see sunlight shine through it. Munyaradzi’s simple form, with its clean lines and smooth surfaces, allows us truly to appreciate the beauty of the material. Just stunning.
It seems this year is all about the agate! In the past, it was unheard of for sculptors in Zimbabwe to use such an extremely hard material. However, artists such as Tafadzwa Tandi and Tago Tazvitya have been pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. We’re now seeing more and more artists experimenting with Mozambican agate. Certainly, it is difficult and expensive to sculpt, requiring specialist electric tools, but the end result is extraordinary.
