Nesbert says he had the idea for this piece in his dreams, hence the title. We all know the feeling of waking up having dreamt something important and rushing to write it down before the memory fades.
It’s the simplicity of Nesbert’s work that appeals to us. He feels no necessity to clutter his works, so there is a bareness and a clarity to both line and form.
Such simplicity allows the viewer to enjoy the incredible internal colour and structure of the stone, as well as appreciating the purity of the sculptural form.
This type of ‘leopard rock’ serpentine from northern Zimbabwe is very hard and challenging to sculpt. All the colour and texture within the stone are entirely natural, including the veins, which are not cracks.
