Nesbert Mukomberanwa is one of the most talented names in the contemporary scene of Zimbabwe’s stone sculpture movement, commonly known as Shona Sculpture. He is the nephew of the most respected artist in Shona sculpture, Nicholas Mukomberanwa. Nesbert’s work is abstract minimalism. Here, he captures the essence of the bird with a few confident lines.

Nesbert’s minimalist sculpting style, so sleek and simple, is perfect for such a colourful stone, with its fascinating internal structure. It’s so important not to overcomplicate the form of the sculpture so it ends up fighting the medium.

This lovely green and black stone is a very hard type of serpentine from northern Zimbabwe; it’s known locally as ‘leopard rock’. The veins in the stone are entirely natural, they are not flaws or lines of weakness.

Imperial measurements are:
14 3/5″ x 10 4/5″ x 6 3/10″ and weight 27 1/2lbs
