A very striking abstract representation of a mother bird and her baby chick. The taller upright is the mother’s long neck and head, ending in the point of her beak. She is looking upwards, scanning the skies for danger, whilst she leans protectively over her chick. Nestled below, the chick’s head leans in towards its mother. The sweep of the more substantial base represents the nest they share.
Nesbert Mukomberanwa is one of the most talented names in the contemporary scene of Zimbabwe’s stone sculpture movement, commonly known as Shona Sculpture. He is the nephew of the most respected artist in Shona sculpture, Nicholas Mukomberanwa. Nesbert’s work is abstract minimalism. His elegant simple forms capturing the essence of the subject matter with a few confident lines.
‘Cobalt stone’ is the local Zimbabwean name for this lovely colourful type of serpentine. This variety is pale green and light pink, sometimes even verging on white. It comes from near the town of Guruve, in northern Zimbabwe. It’s lovely, and not often used, which is a great shame.
NB: It does not, as far as we know, contain any cobalt mineral – perhaps someone originally discovered it near a cobalt mine.
