This fantastic sculpture in pink and green agate is actually an abstract representation of a person’s head.
The front is the face, with a nose bottom right and eye top left. These are very subtle changes in the surface of the piece – we’ve tried to light the sculpture in the studio to make them more visible.
Chris says,
“The stone itself had two harder areas, which became the nose and eye. When I started the piece, I didn’t even realise there were green parts in between!”
The back is rough, like hair. It’s very common for Zimbabwean sculptors to leave a hint of the original surface, or even to incorporate it into the finished sculpture. It helps to remind the viewer where the sculpture came from, what the artist started with.
