Painted in Lovemore’s trademark style, with bold daubs of colour, Stodart Police Station is a lovely example of Lovemore’s work. Lovemore Kambudzi has consistently captured and celebrated contemporary urban African life in his native Harare, Zimbabwe.
This scene was inspired after Lovemore was the victim of crime. He was mugged on the street, and went to the nearby police station in Stodart, a district in central Harare, to report the crime. Orderly chaos seems to be what he found, with victims and relatives amassed waiting to be seen at the central desk; opposite, captured miscreants hang their heads in resignation.
The current owner is offering this painting for sale through Guruve. They acquired it at auction; sadly, it has lost its previous history. However, the auction house was able to confirm it came from a private collection of contemporary African art in London. We have since confirmed its authenticity with the artist.
It is signed and dated in the bottom right hand corner.
