Always looking to stay ahead of the competition and keep copyists on their toes, Royal continually experiments with new styles and finishes. This piece is a great new approach that literally flips the past on its head, as Royal stacks the chicks upwards rather than creating wide flat pieces.
Springstone is a particularly good sculpture medium, as it has a very even internal structure of small grains of rock, and is therefore perfect for Royal’s detailed style of sculpting. Royal creates his trademark stippled feathered effect by hand – he strikes the surface of the sculpture repeatedly and precisely, with a chasing hammer.
