Portrait photo of first generation Shona sculptor Bernard Matemera of Tengenenge, Zimbabwe

Bernard Matemera

Sculptor

This substantial and imposing sculpture is a exceptional example of the work of the late great Bernard Matemera. It would be a fantastic addition to any serious Shona sculpture collection.

It is being offered for sale on behalf of a private collector. The current owner acquired it from the estate of Richard, Lord Attenborough who had purchased it in Zimbabwe c. 1986 when he was filming ‘Cry Freedom’. As she is also an expert on Zimbabwe’s Shona sculpture movement, the seller was invited to Lord Attenborough’s home to view his collection of Shona sculpture. He had also opened one of her exhibitions and was publicly stated that these works should “deserved to be permanently on display in a national gallery in the UK.”

Bernard has signed it on the base.

We have carried out a full restoration of this piece, so it is in perfect pristine condition. The seller has provided a letter detailing its provenance. We will also provide a certificate of authenticity for the piece.

It is located in the UK and will be shipped from there; P&P at buyer’s expense.
