What a fascinating piece!

Shona spirit beliefs are often at the root of intriguing sculptures. Some traditional healers, or n’angas, are believed to able to enter the spirit world; and they are thought to change shape and become animals to move around. This appears to inform some of the work of early artists such as Joram Mariga and Bernard Matemera, where human and animal forms are shared and blurred.

Here is Nicholas’ take on this belief, with a striking sculpture that is half woman, half eagle (with folded wings and its claws peeking out at the base).

Nicholas’ pieces are characterised by stylized forms executed with great precision, and geometric patterns influenced by traditional village decorations.

Guruve is advertising this piece for sale on behalf of a private collector who purchased it in 2023 from a well-known collection in South Africa. Although this piece has no historical paperwork, Guruve has no doubt of its authenticity and we will provide a certificate. The style of Nicholas’ signature dates this piece to c. 1980, and other pieces from the same collection had this date.

Condition is excellent.
