The fluid abstract form represents a family of owl chicks in the nest, watching in all directions. From various angles, from viewpoints all around the sculpture, the lines of the stone and the holes (‘negative space’) combine to create what looks like owls with wide open eyes.
Of course, as with all art and particularly the very abstract works, you can interpret it as you wish!
There is a very pleasing fluidity to the lines of this sculpture, a softness to its organic form. Indeed, it’s hard to believe that Munyaradzi has sculpted this work from granite, one of the hardest stones available. Family Together is an exceptional piece, one of the stand-out stars of this year’s collection of Shona sculpture.
The pink colour of stone is very appealing and the speckled texture within the stone gives it a fascinating subtlety and depth. Clearly, being granite, it will be suitable for outdoor display in all climates. With interest from all angles, it would be a perfect garden centrepiece.
