This powerful sculpture is by Sylvester Mubayi, who was one of the great names of the ‘first generation’ of Zimbabwe’s Shona sculpture movement.
Guruve is advertising this piece for sale on behalf of a private seller. The piece dates from circa 1980.
The seller’s father bought this sculpture at a charity auction in Harare in the early 1980s. It was displayed in pride of place in their farmhouse in Zimbabwe. When they moved to the UK in 2003, they brought it with them.
It has always been kept indoors, and is therefore in perfect condition. A letter of provenance from the seller and our certificate of authenticity accompany the piece.
This glorious bright green stone is verdite, a very hard and expensive semi-precious stone. It is much prized by Zimbabwean sculptors for its beautiful deep green colour. The colour and texture of this particular example are very attractive, and draw you in – it’s lovely to touch as well as to look at.
